The 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk for Sickle Cell hosted by the Neuse-Pamlico Sound Women's Coalition.
The Neuse-Pamlico Sound Women's Coalition (NPSWC) is hosting its 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk for Sickle Cell on March 11, 2017. The March for Sickle Cell will be a “Race within a Race,” starting & finishing with the Neuse River Bridge Run 5K runners & walkers and following the same route.
“Why Sickle Cell?” you might ask. The answer is simple. SCD is a devastating blood disease that affects millions worldwide. More than 300,000 of those with the disease are in the US, with close to 2,000 infants born with SCD here annually. SCD has only one FDA approved medication for treatment, and there is a shortage of specialists to treat the condition. This often-overlooked disease affects the minority community at an alarming rate, yet funding for research and treatment is being eliminated. Therefore, all monies raised by the March for Sickle Cell will be used locally, just as the Bridge Run has supported local organizations for 12 years.
The March for Sickle Cell 5K will award overall winners. There will be awards for Male/Female 1st & 2nd places in the following age groups: 9-under, 10-19, 20-39, 40-59, and 60+. We invite you to register today and come out for this fun, "race within a race" and help many in need in our local community! BE SURE TO REGISTER BY FEBRUARY 20 TO GUARANTEE THAT YOU GET A T-SHIRT!
